Retailer Line Reference


What is a Retailer Line Reference?

Some of our suppliers require that every line of an order have a reference number. This is the Retailer Line Reference box that appears in the Shopping Cart and as you select items to add to your carts/order lists.

How do I know if a supplier requires this field?

In your shopping cart, we mark the field with a red asterisk if it is currently blank but is required by that supplier and must be filled in before you can Send your order.

What do I put in the Retailer Line Reference field?

Many retailers simply enter their PO number in the Retailer Line Reference box for every line on the order. We have a tool under Edit Order Settings that can do this for you:

Other retailers prefer to use a different code in each retailer line reference box to indicate internal information such as which customer the title is for or why else they are ordering it.

Retailer Line References should not include leading or trailing spaces and should be 14 ASCII characters or less. ASCII includes English characters (upper and lowercase), numbers, and common keyboard punctuation but does not support accented characters.

Can I use a Retailer Line Reference even if it's not required?

Yes. Many retailers use this field to indicate internal information such as which customer the title is for.

However, please note that using a different Retailer Line Reference than your PO number can have these unanticipated effects depending on the supplier:

  • The Retailer Line Reference may become the supplier's main identification number (instead of the PO number) on their paperwork and if you call them.
  • The supplier may apply minimums and discounts to each separate Retailer Line Reference instead of per PO as you were expecting.
  • Single-use promotional codes may not work with multiple Retailer Line References.
